Johnny Morris, Founder of Bass Pro Shops®

Our founder challenged us to create the finest baitcaster in the world, one that exceeds the bounds of current technology. Here it is.

Welcome to a new standard of performance. It’s been called “one of the lightest…smoothest, most powerful baitcast reels ever made.” The materials and technology used to craft this special reel are second to none.

  • Frame: One-piece solid aluminum; lightweight and very tough.
  • Sideplates: Solid, rigid aluminum. No flex, no slippage.
  • Exterior finish: Gold titanium deposition. Unbreachable long-term protection from dings, damage, and color fade.
  • Spool: Aircraft-grade machined-aluminum, pre-drilled to minimize weight and maximize casting distance.
  • Drive gear/crankshaft: Duralumin aircraft-grade alloy.
  • Bearings: Two German stainless steel double-shielded ball bearings to support the spool shaft, eight stainless steel double-shielded ball bearings, one Powerlock™ instant anti-reverse bearing. 11 bearings total, strategically placed for uncompromised smoothness throughout the system.
  • Cast control: Advanced DBS Dual Braking System™.
  • Drag: Oversized Teflon®/stainless stacked discs.
  • Hardware: Recurve handle and drag star.
For comfort, quality, durability, and performance, we think this baitcaster compares favorably to any other reel out there. Give it a try this season!

These reels are bullet proof. They are strong enough to catch sharks. I put lots of bass tournament hours on these reels with no maintenance and they hold up. I catch muskies by accident while bass fishing and they can handle them no problem.

This reel will handle any freshwater fish you can throw a bait to. I havent fished muskies but a decent size pike came with no problems and experience muskie fishing with a old bps gold baitcaster im sure this will handle just as well.

They did. As I understand it this model has been discontinued / renamed. The new real is called the bass caster. Same real just not at a closeout price.

I have MS and have switched to left-handed reels. I find it hard to find left-handed baitcasting reels, not right-handed ? Spin-cast is handle-reversible, not bait-casters!

Right now, both models being offered are left-handed. However, they have also been made in right-handed models in the past.

Call BPS up and see if they will be making right-handed models again in the future.

Or, you can call one of their stores and ask them if they have a right-handed model in stock. You can always ask them to mail it to you, and see what they say.

Spool Tension Knob

Details:
I just purchased this fine reel, got it home & rigged up only to find I had to tighten the spool tension knob almost all the way to get my lure to fall just right! If i barely loosened it,my lure would fall fast & if I tightened it completely I could still shake the rod & get my lure to drop some. Now I'm no beginner(I EXCLUSIVELY FISH JM SIGS(3)& PQ'S(3). So i took it back to Bass Pro,& we tested 4 more. The Salesman said they are just made that way. Anybody else have or had this problem or are they really made that way? Any help would be appreciated!!

I had not given notice to this with my gold 6.8 to 1 but since I checked it I have found that it was within about 2/3's of a turn with a 5" rubber swimbait on it . It would have to be a much heavier bait though to make it need to be turned all the way up . Yet it is alot closer to as tight as it will go than I had ever suspected it was . None of my other reels are like this . BassPro or anyothers that I have. Maybe you could put a small metal shim in it like the ones in Shimano reels . They have a small round metal shim under the ceramic plate in them. Good Luck.

Yes there is a 6.4 and 7to1 ratios. They don't list it on the website but if you call your local Bass Pro they can order one if they don't have it in stock.

BassPro baitcast and spinning reels are made in China . I don't know about other products they sell but most of them are from China too. Although I have come across a few inferior products through the years I can say for the most part BassPro products are very reliable.

Pretty much just the color. But the Gold has 11 bearings and the new black one is only going to have 10 so... the gold is better. And the black one is going to be more expensive.

Not much . Just the bearings are all now japanese bearings . The gold reel had german bearings on the spool. The handle is now a carbon handle and does not come with a set different grips . With the gold reel you had two grips for a choice between better grip or lighter weight. Really while the gold reel is still being offered I recommend it over the new one . Is the new handle really worth $30 more . Maybe but I can tell you this the gold reel is a super reel for the current price. You will not be disappointed with it . I promise you.

This reel definitely will handle cobia but when fishing for cobia you will catch other types of fish too and its really not too good for anything bigger . I also would like to be able to put a little more musle to them in case old mister jaws gets after that cobia . These reels don't have alot stronger drag but they will not fade at all and they hold plenty of line unless your hooking up with 100 plus size fish. The small Avet SXreels are perfect cobia reels. Not a tougher small saltwater reel out there . Oh sure there are comparable ones but not as small and the Avets really have the bling bling factor to them as well. I have Avet SX single5.3 to 1 gear ratio reels but the two speed reels are a little more versatile . Those cobia really taste great and can be a total blast to fish for . It's been over a year since I fished for them and my Avets are getting angry with me over it . Good Luck !!
